ABANDONMENT OF PIPE AND STRUCTURES

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 THE REQUIREMENT
A. This section covers the Work necessary for the abandonment of pipe and structures. B. The CONTRACTOR shall furnish all labor, tools, equipment, materials, and supplies
to complete the Work as indicated on the Drawings and specified herein.

C. Existing pipe and structures shall be abandoned per SSPWC 306-5, as specified herein, and as shown on the Drawings. Manhole cones and adjusting rings shall be completely removed and disposed of, unless otherwise shown.

D. Manholes and structures to be abandoned shall be perforated or cored through the base and filled with sand.

E. The CONTRACTOR shall repair or replace all asphalt, concrete pavement, earthwork, landscaping, or other surface damaged by the abandonment operations.

F. The CONTRACTOR shall provide traffic control as required and approved by the agency having jurisdiction.

G. Existing pipe and structures shall be abandoned and/or relocated in accordance with the construction sequence specified and as shown on the Drawings. Under no circumstances shall abandonment take place before existing sewers and manholes are out of service and all flow is directed to new or alternate pipes.

H. Frame and Cover sets shown to be salvaged, shall be delivered to the OCSD. All others sets shall be properly disposed of by the CONTRACTOR.

1.2 RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE

A. The requirements of the following sections and divisions apply to the Work of this section. Other sections and divisions of the Specifications, not referenced below, shall also apply to the extent required for proper performance of this Work.

1.3 REFERENCE SPECIFICATIONS, CODES, AND STANDARDS

A. All Work specified herein shall conform to or exceed the applicable requirements of the referenced portions of the following publications to the extent that the provisions thereof are not in conflict with other provisions of these Specifications.
B. Comply with the applicable editions of the following codes, regulations and standards.

SSPWC Subsection 306-5 Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction, Abandonment of Conduits and Structures

C. Comply with the applicable reference Specifications as directed in the General
Requirements and the Additional General Requirements.

1.4 CONTRACTOR SUBMITTALS

A. Submittals shall be made in accordance with the General Requirements, Additional
General Requirements and as specified herein.

B. The CONTRACTOR shall submit for review to the ENGINEER the methods, materials, and procedures to be used.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. General:
1. The CONTRACTOR shall demonstrate that pipe and structures to be abandoned have been completely filled, without voids, by providing volume calculations for each placement of grout and materials strength tests as required by the ENGINEER.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 SAND

A. As specified in Section 02200, Earthwork.

2.2 CONCRETE

A. As specified in Section 03300, Cast-in-Place Concrete.

2.3 SAND CEMENT SLURRY

A. Sand slurry consisting of one sack (94 pounds) of Portland cement per cubic yard of sand and sufficient moisture for workability may be substituted for other backfill materials to aid in reducing compaction difficulties. Specific methods and procedures must be submitted to the ENGINEER for approval prior to construction.

2.4 LOW DENSITY CELLULAR CONCRETE

A. Elastizell EF, Cellular Concrete Geofoam, Or Equal

2.5 GROUT

A. As specified in Section 03600, Grouts.
PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 GENERAL

A. The CONTRACTOR is responsible for selection of methods and materials to be used. Abandonments shall be shown in the construction schedule and coordinated with the sequence of construction. Appropriate plugs shall be installed by the CONTRACTOR, subject to acceptance by the ENGINEER. Grout shall be injected in an upslope manner to remove trapped air. Additional portals may need to be installed for proper venting or verification of the abandonment. The CONTRACTOR shall accurately update the materials used and limits of the abandonment on the As-Built Drawings. The CONTRACTOR shall repair any linings damaged during the abandonment operations and inform the ENGINEER of any additional linings that require repair. Lined manholes or structures where work occurred shall be spark tested to verify the existing lining is leak proof.
