GATE VALVES


PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 THE REQUIREMENT

A. The CONTRACTOR shall furnish and install gate valves, complete and operable, as shown and specified herein, including manual, electric, hydraulic, and pneumatic operators, epoxy coating, control units, and appurtenant work, in accordance with the requirements of the Contract Documents.

1.2 RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE

A. The requirements of the following sections and divisions apply to the Work of this section. Other sections and divisions of the Specifications, not referenced below, shall also apply to the extent required for proper performance of this Work.

3. Section 09800, Protective Coating

1.3 REFERENCE SPECIFICATIONS, CODES, AND STANDARDS

A. All Work specified herein shall conform to or exceed the applicable requirements of the referenced portions of the following publications to the extent that the provisions thereof are not in conflict with other provisions of these Specifications.

B. Comply with the applicable editions of the following codes, regulations and standards.

1. Industry Standards:

ASTM B 62 Standard Specification for Composition Bronze or Ounce Metal Castings

ASTM B 98 Standard Specification for Copper-Silicon Alloy
Rod, Bar and Shapes

AWWA C500 Metal-Seated Gate Valves for Water Supply
Service

C. Comply with the applicable reference Specifications as directed in the General
Requirements and Additional General Requirements.

1.4 CONTRACTOR SUBMITTALS

A. Submittals shall be made in accordance with the General Requirements, Additional
General Requirements and as specified herein.

B. Submittals shall be made in accordance with Section 15100, Valves, General.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. General:
1. Comply with the requirements specified herein and the applicable reference
Specifications of the General Requirements and Additional General Requirements.

2. Manufacturer with at least five years of experience in the type of equipment or service being provided.
1.6 WARRANTY

1. Guarantees and Warranty shall be furnished in accordance with “Warranty” (CONTRACTOR’s Guarantee) of the General Conditions and Section 15100, Valves, General.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 GENERAL

A. Gate valves shall not be used underground. Valves shall be capable of being repacked under line pressure. Valves 14 inches and larger installed in vertical pipes with their stems horizontal shall be fitted with bronze slides, tracks, rollers, and scrapers to assist the travel of the gate assembly.

B. Each valve shall be furnished with a hand-wheel and shall open counterclockwise, except where electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic operators are shown or specified. For other operators see Section 15101, Valve Operators.

C. All ferrous surfaces of the valves, 4 inches and larger, that will be in contact with water shall be amine cured epoxy-coated as specified for System No. 100, Section
09800, Protective Coating.

2.2 METAL-SEATED GATE VALVES (3 INCHES AND LARGER)

A. Double-Disc Type: Metal-seated gate valves for water service shall conform to AWWA C500. Valves shall be of the double-disc, parallel resilient seat type with rising stem, 200-pound, opening counter-clockwise, outside screw and yoke (OS&Y), and provided with a 2-inch-square operating nut or hand-wheel, as shown, except where electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic operators are shown. Valves shall be pressure rated for
150 pounds per inch. Stems shall be silicon bronze conforming to ASTM B 98, alloy No. C66100. Valves shall have flanged ends, to match pipe.

2.3 KNIFE GATE VALVES

A. Knife gate valves for sewage or centrate service shall be bonnetless wafer type, constructed entirely of Type 316 stainless steel, with resilient seat and a rated pressure of 150 pounds per inch. Valve body, gate, flange faces, outside trim, packing gland, bolting, stem, and yoke shall be constructed of Type 316 stainless steel. Resilient seat shall be EPDM, packing and packing cord shall be TFE-impregnated synthetic. Gates shall be finish ground on both sides to prevent packing or seat damage. Actuator shall be handwheel. Port design shall be full round.

2.4 GATE VALVES (SMALLER THAN 3-INCH)

A. Construction: Gate valves, smaller than 3 inches, for clear water or air use shall be heavy-duty type for industrial service, with threaded ends or ends to match lines. The bodies shall be bronze and have screwed tops or union bonnets, of bronze conforming to ASTM B 62, with bronze stems, solid wedges, metal hand-wheels, and Teflon impregnated or other acceptable packing. All valves shall have rising stems unless otherwise specified or shown. All valves shall have a minimum pressure rating of 150 pounds per inch steam, or 300 pounds per inch cold water, unless otherwise specified or shown.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. All gate valves shall be installed in accordance with AWWA standards and the manufacturer's printed recommendations, and in accordance with the applicable provisions of Section 15100, Valves, General.
